Cervical smears are aimed at detecting cancer of the cervix at a stage at which it is treatable. Women between the ages of 25 and 64 are offered cervical screening at intervals defined nationally. Women are invited by Public Health to make an appointment with the nurse. (Age 65+ - for women who have not been screened since age 50 or have had recent abnormal tests. Women aged 65 or over who have had 3 consecutive negative smears are taken out of the recall programme.)

Currently the GP performs an assessment at approximately 8 weeks. Health visitors carry out other opportunistic screening  and also assess children at 12-14 months. It is hoped that health visitors/allied staff will have access to children in nurseries or playgroups at 2-3 years of age, to liaise with staff there and assess their progress.

COPD clinic

For those patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, an annual review and spirometry (lung function test) is carried out by our specialist nurses.  Advice is given and inhalers discussed to help patients lead as normal a life as possible.

For patients diagnosed as suffering with diabetes. Regular checks are carried out by our nurses and health care assistants, and an annual check is done by one of our Specialist Practitioners, Pauline Royer or Sarah Gardner, who have a special interest in long term condition management. Patients will be invited in for this check on or around their birthday month, but if you have not had a regular check please contact reception to arrange an appointment.
